EMDR Therapy in Alabama

When understanding isn't enough to create change.

You may understand where your patterns come from. You may even be able to explain exactly why you respond the way you do.

But sometimes, knowing why isn't enough to help you respond differently.

EMDR therapy can help you process the experiences that shaped the way you see yourself, relate to others, and respond to the world—so you can begin to feel and respond differently in the present.

I provide online EMDR therapy throughout Alabama for adults who are ready to move beyond simply managing symptoms and begin addressing what's underneath them.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a trauma-focused therapy that helps the brain process experiences that may still feel emotionally or physically unresolved.

When difficult experiences aren't fully processed, they can continue to influence how we feel, think, behave, and relate—even when we consciously know that we're safe now.

You might notice this as:

  • Anxiety or emotional overwhelm

  • Strong reactions that feel bigger than the situation

  • Difficulty trusting yourself or others

  • Feeling disconnected, numb, or shut down

EMDR isn't about erasing memories or pretending difficult things didn't happen. Instead, the goal is to help you process what happened so those experiences have less power over how you experience your life today.

You Don't Have to Have One Big Traumatic Event

When many people hear “trauma therapy,” they picture one clearly defined traumatic event.

But sometimes the experiences that shape us are much more subtle.

They can develop through years of:

  • Feeling responsible for other people's emotions

  • Growing up without having your emotional needs consistently recognized

  • Learning to suppress your own needs

  • Feeling like you had to be the strong one

These experiences can shape the beliefs you carry about yourself and the ways you learned to cope.

EMDR can be used to work with many different kinds of experiences, not only what we traditionally think of as trauma.

When You Already Understand Your Past

This is one of the reasons EMDR may be particularly helpful for people who have already spent time in therapy.

You may be incredibly self-aware.

You may know:

“I think this comes from my childhood.”

“I know why I people-please.”

“I understand why conflict makes me shut down.”

“I know my perfectionism is connected to how I grew up.”

And yet you still find yourself doing the same things.

That's because intellectual understanding and emotional processing aren't always the same thing.

Therapy with me isn't about endlessly analyzing your past. We use your understanding of your history as a starting point for deeper work: helping you process what happened and develop new ways of relating to yourself and others.

How I Integrate EMDR, IFS & Somatic Work

EMDR is one part of the way I work.

I also incorporate Internal Family Systems (IFS) and somatic practices when they're appropriate for your needs.

These approaches can work together to help us understand both the experiences that shaped you and the ways you've learned to protect yourself.

EMDR

Helps process experiences that continue to feel emotionally unresolved.

IFS

Helps us understand the different “parts” of you that developed to protect you and navigate difficult experiences.

Somatic work

Helps us pay attention to what's happening in your body and nervous system—not just what you can explain intellectually.

The goal isn't to force you into a particular technique. We'll work collaboratively and at a pace that feels appropriate for you.

What EMDR Therapy Can Help With

EMDR may be helpful for adults experiencing:

  • Anxiety and emotional overwhelm

  • Difficult childhood experiences or trauma

  • Attachment and relationship patterns

  • Perfectionism and people-pleasing

  • Emotional disconnection or numbness

  • Low self-worth or shame

Online EMDR Therapy Throughout Alabama

I provide therapy virtually to adults throughout Alabama.

Online therapy allows you to do this work from a space where you feel comfortable and supported, without having to travel to an office.

I currently offer individual therapy sessions by video, and we'll begin with a consultation to determine whether working together feels like a good fit.

Is EMDR Right for You?

EMDR isn't necessarily the right approach for everyone, and you don't need to decide that before reaching out.

During an initial consultation, we can talk about what you're experiencing, what you've tried before, and what you're hoping will change.

From there, we can determine whether my approach, and EMDR specifically, may be a good fit for what you need.
